Groundhog Day Love!

As the odd child, I have some odd interests. One of them is my favorite holidays. My favorite holiday is (drumroll please…) GROUNDHOG DAY!!!
I know, it seems lame, but quite honestly it’s not. To start with, the groundhog’s name is fabulous. Punxsutawney Phil. That’s right. Though this is a handful to write, it is really quite simple to say: Punks-a-Taw-nee. I don’t think there is one person on this earth that cannot say that his name is fun to say.
Another reason I love Groundhog Day is that it doesn’t have many people that consider it their favorite holiday. With the Super Bowl, Americans often forget about Groundhog Day. I feel that Groundhog Day needs some love. You should join me and make it a more popular holiday. My third reason for loving Groundhog Day is because there is a groundhog that has literally been living in a pit for three months and then gets scared by its shadow back into the pit. SCARED BY ITS SHADOW! Its shadow! I find this hilarious.
The final reason that Groundhog Day is important is because it sets our calendar. If the groundhog sees his shadow, he will scamper back into his hole and will signal that there are six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will come earlier (actually, I don’t know how much less we have to wait if he doesn’t see his shadow. It could possibly be the same length, but it’s cool to think about). Most people would find this confusing. You may be thinking “If he sees his shadow, it would be sunny, therefore warmer and more spring-y.” I once thought this too, but I realized that if it is sunny then the cold front hasn’t came through yet, which will make it colder in the future.
Anyway, this concludes my Groundhog Day love. Spread the GDL (Groundhog Day Love) if you want to. It might just save a groundhog.
Okay… I just made that up, but it could be true.
Signed,
The Odd Child
